Ponce City Market

New Urban Roswell shares a well-made video about the Ponce City Market, a huge adaptive reuse project alongside the Atlanta Beltline. When it’s completed next year, the two million square-foot, 1926 building (originally a Sears store/warehouse) will be retail, restaurants, office, condos and apartments.

A $2.7 million bridge for pedestrian/bicycle access to the Beltline path is being built alongside the Market, helping to give an alternative-transportation access point to the development and the surrounding area. Also in easy walking distance is the wonderful Fourth Ward Historic Park

The Ponce City Market is an exciting project. Since I was a teen in the 1980s, going to the nearby Masquerade for concerts, I’ve seen that behemoth looming over the area. It was spooky when it was empty. Even in it’s City Hall East days it felt underused and a bit hollow. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

While we’re on the subject, keep in mind this weekend that the section of Ponce de Leon Avenue in front of the Market will be closed from June 8 through 11 and again from June 15 through June 18 for work on the Atlanta BeltLine.
